Think bamboo bedding for a panda-themed room

white bedding with green bamboo design

Mourning the loss of the Animal Planet panda bedding set lately. It was perfect – purple, panda, bamboo. A great centerpiece to the panda bedroom idea I dreamed up ages ago.

But, designs move on and so must we, unfortunately. (I’m always sad when people ask me where to find old bedding designs that just aren’t available anywhere anymore.)

So color me happy when I ran across the green and white bedding set pictured here. It’s a great shade of green in a design that looks enough like bamboo growing to work in an Asian or panda-themed bedroom. There are splashes of yellow, turquoise and purple to add some extra color and provide some directions for your color palette. Although it fits right in with the greens and pinks of the room design I came up with since most of the pink was in the bedding.

I like the way they pulled the blue out from the comforter to paint the walls, but you could go with one of the greens if you preferred. Definitely calls for a color on the wall behind the bed, though, to contrast with all that white.

Muppets mayhem for the bedroom

September 27th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Kids Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

Muppets Comforter at TargetMuppets!!!!

I was so excited to see the Muppets making a comeback on the big screen last year and winning over a new generation. And given Disney’s marketing prowess, it wasn’t long until we started seeing a lot of cool products out featuring our favorite characters as well.

But while you can get all kinds of toys and shirts and school supplies with Kermit or Fozzie or Miss Piggy, stuff for a kids room has been in short supply. (Why does that line of merchandise always take the longest to get!?!) You can always do Muppet posters and toys, even toss in a few Muppets wall decals to create a Muppets bedroom. Pick a character color – green for Kermit, pink for Miss Piggy, red for Animal – and use that as a base and emphasis for the room.

Muppets Sheet Set at Target

Or you could start the easy way with Muppets bedding. If you can find any, that is. The only set I’ve seen so far (in the US) has been this Muppets comforter and sheet set over at Target. Fortunately, they’re pretty darned cool, so that kind of makes up for it being the only one out there. Because of the colors in the comforter, you could go with gray, navy or red for the wall behind the bed. All would work great.

Downside? Yes, there is one. A big one. Or rather, a small one. The bedding only comes in twin size. Bummer. Especially given how many grown-ups today have been Muppets fans for years. Fingers crossed for that to change someday soon!

Boys Bedroom Ideas: Rugby bedding

April 19th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Boy Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

Well, sort of rugby, really. This gorgeous quilt set from Greenland Home Fashions is called a rugby quilt set. And it certainly evokes elements of rugby with the stripes and numbers.

But really, I can see this being used in so many different ways that aren’t rugby specific. It definitely works in a general sports bedroom theme. (Note the balls and trophies on the shelf in the picture.) I’d say something with a vintage feel to it, actually. The colors and style of the numbers lean that way. But I could also see it in a race car room, again with a vintage feel to it.

What other themes with numbers can you think of that this set would work with? Gotta love when you can work outside the box the designer wants to put you in!

Set comes in twin and full/queen sizes and you can opt for the little floor pillow for just $10.

Tie up this girls bedroom idea with a bow

March 29th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Girl Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

All the bows on this bedding set just scream “girl” to me. Without doing it too loudly, of course. (Not very ladylike.)

Actually, this bows comforter set from Target is a great way to start off a girls bedroom theme. The black background keeps it from feeling too little girl, while the pink bows ensure there is no question it’s a girls room. And you get a couple of shades of pink to work with here.

Given the style of the design, I’m leaning toward elegant and French rather than something too little girl as far as the rest of the room. And you can’t think elegant without thinking Audrey Hepburn, right? Love this image of her as Holly Golightly – just the right note and colors. I also really liked this set of fashion prints; again elegant and the right colors and feel. Oh, and don’t forget a chandelier!

UPDATE: I created a board on Pinterest related to this post. It has the items shown here as well as tons more I found that fit with the concept.

Finally – unicorn bedding perfect for little girls

March 20th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Girl Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

We tend to think all little girls just love unicorns, right? So I’ve never understood why it was impossible to find anything with unicorns that worked for girls.

Yes, you could find a few things that were more on the adult fantasy lover side of things. Not really the kind of thing an 8-year-old would go for.

But finally, thanks to the folks at DwellStudio, there’s a unicorn duvet set any girl would love. And since it’s DwellStudio, the design is sharp and modern with great color choices. You can also get just the pillow shams if you’d like to add just a touch of the design to a lilac and orange color scheme.

Since there is a lack of pink in the set, I’d stick with orange and lilac solids in adding pieces around the room. I love the idea of a lilac accent wall behind the bed and orange furniture pieces around the room.

Teen Bedroom Ideas: Kicking it with Roxy bedding

January 31st, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Teen Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

As girls get older, there comes a point when they’re ready to ditch the stuffed animals and think a little more grown up with their bedroom decor.

But grown-up doesn’t have to mean stuffy. Nor does it have to mean super themed like a little kids room might be. No, a teen bedroom can be mature but fun. A good place to start for a lot of teen girls would be with Roxy bedding designs.

Roxy is a surfing brand and has translated that fun into its bedding. One of the ones I love best is the Summer Stripe bed in a bag set pictured here. It has everything you need for the bed and comes in all the sizes a teen would want. It brings in lots of colors (including just a dab of pink) and stripes are a nice background for just about any other decor she’d want to bring in.

Along with comforter and duvet sets, Roxy recently added a few quilt sets to its collection, including the Element Quilt pictured here. Again, a nice neutral backdrop to whatever other decorating she wants to do and just enough girly to make it hers. The quilt sets are a bit cheaper than the others, which is another great reason to consider them.

Teen Bedroom Ideas: Road trip

January 24th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Teen Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

What teen doesn’t dream of the day they get behind the wheel? And somewhere in the heart of every adventurer is the longing for a road trip.

Evoke some of that dream with a road trip bedroom theme, perfect for any teen with the yen to wander. I started with the Road Trip bed in a bag set pictured here, a nice dark backdrop that would definitely please a teen boy. The dark navy, slate blue and white palette is a great one to work with as well since it is elegant and grown-up. But enjoy the splashes of yellow in there that add a bit of fun.

I tracked down this mural over at Murals Your Way called The 8 Ball that uses some of the same colors as well as repeats the palm trees from the comforter. Looks like the kind of place you’d want to stop on a road trip, right?

The rest of the decor in a room like this is pretty easy to imagine. Road signs in black, white and yellow (warning – curves ahead!), maps plotted out with a trip, posters of where you want to go or places you’ve been.

blue toddler boy beddingTake a quick scan through the most popular toddler bedding and you’ll see a billion characters you know (and sometimes love!) from TV and movies. And, it’s entirely likely that’s exactly what your child wants.

But what if you’d like to have something a little more flexible at the heart of the room? Something without a real theme that would blend in with decor you’re carrying over from the nursery or decor you’re hoping they’ll keep when they graduate to a big kid room?

How about a single color modern design? One really popular set (that’s also very reasonably priced) is the Metro toddler bedding pictured here that includes the comforter and sheet set. (Oh, and ships free at Amazon!) There’s also a pink version for your little girl’s bed.

Now, if you’d like to work with something other than the traditional pink or blue, Olli & Lime’s toddler bedding might be just the trick. It comes in nice bright colors – Billie in orange and brown pictured here and George in bright lime green and brown. They’re a bit more expensive (being designer and all) and only include the quilt and pillowcase. But still a nice bright gender-neutral option to consider.

Teen Bedroom Trends: Giant Flower Bedding

November 8th, 2011 | Posted by ideaqueen in Girl Bedroom Ideas | Teen Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

Not entirely certain when this happened, but flowers are getting bigger. No – it’s not due to global warming. Just a design trend I’m seeing in floral bedding.

It’s mostly targeted to teens, I think, as I look at these styles. Tons of very, very, very large flowers having been making their way into bedding styles. I love most of them because they’re so dramatic and eye-catching and girly without being too little girl (like the Sloane set from Target pictured here). Which makes them perfect for a teen. Not to mention, a few big flowers is far less fussy a look than something with tons of small flowers.

One of the places these are popping up the most is over at Target. Their latest designs are quite slanted in this direction. But there are a ton of options blooming all over. I’ve featured a couple of my favorites here, but you can check out a bigger selection of giant flower bedding I collected over at Squidoo.
