Kids Bedroom Ideas: Open the artist’s toolbox
Feb
This is just the coolest thing I have seen in a while! I always struggle a bit with just how to do an artist bedroom theme. It can go in so many different directions that pinning down just what you want can be tough.
But this bed? The perfect signature piece to kick off the theme. It’s called the Tools of the Trade bed. While the tools aren’t strictly all artist tools (it’s really meant more as a back to school feel), it definitely works with that theme. Only thing I wish was different was the pink crayon since most boys won’t be going for that!
The custom made bed’s is produced here in the US from hardwood, plywood, MDF, PVC and metal. It’s a piece that can stand up to your child’s abuse while being just a totally fun piece of furniture.

Puzzling bedroom – working a puzzle piece theme
Oct
So I found that puzzle ottoman in that other article and started on a trail looking at options for puzzle designs. It’s a great theme idea because it can grow easily with your child and the pieces you buy can work with any other theme your child might want later. It’s a bit of a low-risk investment as far as themes go. The biggest challenge here is trying to come up with a color scheme you like that works with the pieces you find.
First thing I found was this puzzle quilt set over at Linens ‘N Things. I’m actually a smidge surprised that it’s the only puzzle piece bedding I could find. But that’s also the first thing you’re likely to want to change out in a bedroom makeover, so maybe you don’t want to start with that. Maybe this Kidkraft puzzle book shelf would be a better place for you to start. I found it for under $90 at Amazon and the primary colors would go great with a lot of children’s themes. Bonus is that it’s made of wood, so you could sand it down and paint it in different colors as needed.
Out of the tons of puzzle decor pieces I found, there are two I want to show you, mostly because they are good investment pieces due to their color schemes. Well, and they’re just really cool. The first is a puzzle piece wall clock over at Amazon. With all those bright colors, it’s sure to work with any color scheme you use and it just looks really fun. The other is one of lots of puzzle piece rugs I found. I picked this one from Rugs USA because it has all the basic colors you would be likely to use and it doesn’t have straight edges. It’s those kinds of details that add to the wow factor in any room.

Boys Bedroom Ideas: Tron Legacy Theme
Jan
Hot movie of the past year, guaranteed to be a favorite of any boy over the age of 10. (Including a few the age of 45, I’m sure.) But it’s one of those themes you want to have in your room, but they don’t make it easy for you. So here’s my take on how to do a Tron:Legacy bedroom theme.
The color scheme here is pretty dark; totally up to you whether you want to keep the walls light to balance that out. RoomMates does offer a Tron wallpaper that’s a white background, so you might consider that as an option to pair with other things. This scheme started with the video rocker, then I found the mural. Then … I started running into trouble. Trying to find a bedding set to match with this color scheme – tough. But I love the one I stumbled across because the colors work and it has circles.
Where to get it:
- LumiSource Element Touch Table Lamp, Silver at Amazon, free shipping
- Anelace Powers of 2 XLD Binary Clock Blue LED at Amazon, free shipping
- Monster TRON iPod Dock at Sonic Electronix, $249.95
- Comfort Research Tron Legacy Video Rocker at Amazon
- Tron: Legacy XL Wall Mural 6′ x 10.5′ at RoomMates, $155
- TRON Legacy Series 1 Standard Triple Film Cell at EntertainmentEarth.com, $76.99
- TRON Legacy Series 1 Double Film Cell at EntertainmentEarth.com, $69.99
- TRON Legacy Series 1 Mini Montage Film Cell at EntertainmentEarth.com, $89.99
- Vertigo Wall-Mounted Ledge Set in Black Finish (unavailable, check out Melannco Black Chunky Ledge, Set of 4 at Amazon instead
- Cosmo Bed-In-A-Bag at Domestications, no longer available
(Since the comforter in the image isn’t available anymore, I tracked down a few other options that could work with this theme and color scheme. A blue and black reversible comforter, blue and silver duvet set and a black and teal/mint comforter set.)
UPDATE: I also ran into this cool light up tape. Great way to mimic the stripes in the TRON look.
