Making room for two boys in this scheme

blue and green shared bedroom for boys
Got two boys? A shared room for them is a pretty simple affair, really. OK, that’s based on the fact that my two boys are fairly ambivalent about what goes in their room, actually. Just don’t stick pink and girly and they’re OK.

So some basic principles. As with any shared bedroom idea, decide if you want things to be the same, different or coordinated. In this case, I’ve gone with the same – as in each boy is getting the same bedding and they’re in a bunk bed, making the furniture the same as well. However, I ended up with different for the seating – a denim bean bag chair and a tan upholstered chair – and coordinated for the pillows – each boy getting a green pillow, then some versions of orange and blue.

Why, yes. The orange is a totally random color addition, meant to bring in a few punches of color and keep things interesting. Too much blue and green might be calming, but it was starting to border on boring for me as well.

Trend Topic: Everyone loves the Brits and the Union Jack

union jack decor

The hardest part of that British-themed bedroom last week was deciding what not to put in. Because when it comes to design trends, the Union Jack has been taking center stage for a while.

I’m not sure if it’s the crisp red, white and blue that draws us. After all, we get that with the American flag as well. But there is a lovely symmetry about the way the stripes are laid out on the British flag. I’ve found in on everythign from the rug under your feet to the clock on the wall and trust me, there are many, many, many more where these came from. These just happened to be some of my favorite ways to bring the Union Jack design into the room.

Have you added a touch of British love to a room? What did you use?

Nothing to feel blue about in this girl’s bedroom

blue girly bedroom idea
Feeling a little blue trying to decide on a room design? How about taking that blue and using it to your advantage.

Blue isn’t just for boys, and pair it with the crispness of white and you have a room that brings to mind Ming vases and — crockery. I did include a few touches of other colors, mostly pinks, just as some fun accents, but mostly focused on the blue and white.

And check out that bed! It comes with the center bookcase as part of the headboard, then you can configure the rest of it as you wish with extra pieces. All that shelving needs something to fill it, which is where the many baskets and bins comes in. Use them to keep your things organized and dress up the shelves at the same time.

Blue bedroom for your favorite bat boy

July 19th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Boy Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

baseball themed blue boy bedroom

Three things are ruling in this dugout: baseball, blue and stripes. All of which are perfect for a baseball room, actually.

We’ve got several hues of blue going on here – dark navy, medium denims and light sky blues. You could work this same room with a different color that works in the various hues as well. (That rules out red, unfortunately, unless your boy likes pink!)

For the bedding here, I was looking for something with stripes that included a touch of blue. I didn’t want too much blue since it would be going on a blue bed, but that’s a matter of my taste. The rug repeats the stripes, but I wanted something without a overwhelming pattern since it is meant to add color, not be a focal point. The wall decor can be whatever combination of baseball items you want. Great opportunity to do a trophy and medal display, a shadow box with a uniform, glove hanger – whatever your child has used to play with.

Paint colors: YOLO Colorhouse in Air (light stripe) and Sprout (darker stripe), from Home Depot

Bright colors make a perfect room for two

Bright bedroom decorating idea for a shared room

Whoo. Get those shades out. I made this room bright, bright, bright.

I was pondering the idea of how to do a shared bedroom in a cohesive way, especially when you have kids of different sexes. The cool thing with what I came up with is that there are just enough items repeated on each side to make the room feel like one design without taking away the ability to individualize at all.

You could do this in any color combo you want. Just do matching bedding in different colors. In fact, I had a hard time deciding just which colors to do. Thought about purple instead of yellow (Land of Nod has this same comforter in that color as well) and green instead of blue (Land of Nod has gingham bedding in those colors). Either of those would have been a little less bright if you prefer that.

Where I went from there was to repeat certain elements for the kids like the throw pillow on both sides and the matching personalized wall decals, then choose a rug that pulled in both of the main colors. Now, I went with something wildly colorful, but you could find a rug with these colors that would be calmer. But the rug gave me lots of leeway to bring in colorful accents for the room that weren’t necessarily in the two primary colors. Gives a rather eclectic feel by the time you’re done. Oh, and I’d definitely balance out everything with white furniture.

Paint Colors – BEHR Ultra in Gem Turquoise and BEHR Ultra in Lemon Zest, both from Home Depot.

Loving on Lionel Trains for a bedroom theme

June 26th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Boy Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

Train bedroom theme influenced by Lionel Trains

Little boys love trains, and nothing is more iconic than Lionel Trains. I was looking at some of the vintage tin signs that you can get with the Lionel brand and started thinking how to work them into a room. The cool thing with what I’ve come up with is that nothing other than the artwork is specifically train. You could change the art out for baseballs or boats or stars and be good.

I like the idea of a yellow accent wall to put the bed up against, but I know not everyone is that brave. Generally, you could stick with plain white or the pale gray I used here.

As I was hunting for pieces, the main things I was looking for were black iron, red and blue large pieces and yellow accents. The train decal I choose is one of any number of train wall decals you can choose from. Oh, and don’t forget to add in a few actual trains as decor pieces as well!

  2. Blue Crosshatch Wool Grid Rug

Pop art zebra for a mod nursery

June 21st, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Nursery Ideas - (Comments Off)

blue and gray nursery with zebra influence

The overall effect of this room is probably a little more eclectic than modern. Hmm. Definitely pieces of a lot of different styles here, but I like the way they work together.

I was looking for a chunky metal crib with a bit of a vintage feel to it, and while the one shown isn’t precisely chunky, it fits in just fine. And white bedding is the perfect choice here in whatever style you choose.

This all started when I saw a pop art zebra painting hung on a wall with a black, white and gray wallpaper. It made such an interesting contrast that I wanted to try it out myself.

Isn’t that rug cool? (Not to mention incredibly expensive!) It’s called elm and is really tree rings but you could easily mistake it for a zebra. Comes in gray and a few other colors as well.

Modern teen room with a retro twist

June 19th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Teen Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

modern teen bedroom design idea with a retro twist

Since I talked about how to copy a bedroom last time, I decided to try my hand at doing the same for today’s decorating idea/inspiration board. If you check out the Harvy Pool nightstand at CB2, you’ll see a bedroom they have with the nightstand as a part of it. Love the nightstand, liked the room, thought I’d make my own version.

The hardest part of this really was the artwork. There are so many choices out there! Which is great because it’s definitely a way for you to personalize the room to your taste and interests. I definitely got to the “just pick something already” point by the time I choose the EVRT Studio prints. The other thing was the bedding, and I went with the colorful, then throw a white blanket on rather than the other way around. Love the duvet and all the colors in it. Makes it really easy for you to find an accent color or two you really like. (Not everyone would want turquoise and red!)

The walls in the room are white and I think I’d stick with that since it provides the best backdrop for the punchy color accents.

My Little Monster Nursery Idea

April 24th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Nursery Ideas - (Comments Off)

blue green brown monster nursery theme idea

Cocalo just released this adorable new crib bedding called Peek A Boo Monsters and I just couldn’t resist. Look at those adorable faces! The hardest part of this room was trying to limit myself to one of everything. I found tons of rugs that would work, not to mention all the possible decal options that I didn’t even include.

Great idea for a boy nursery, although there’s no reason it couldn’t be for a girl instead. Maybe with greens in place of where I put blues.

Nursery Idea: Disney Cars

February 9th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Nursery Ideas - (Comments Off)

Not sure what took so long, but they’ve finally come out with some Disney Cars bedding options for the nursery. (Actually, Disney is pretty slow about anything for the nursery other than Pooh.)

But now McQueen and Mater are here and ready to make a stop in your little boy’s baby room. My favorite of the sets available is the Disney Cars Junior Junction Fast Friends Crib Set over at Target. I think I just like the fact that it’s not blue! The warm colors give you some great choices in decorating the nursery, providing you with some of the desert colors that surround Radiator Springs.

Still, if you want to go with blue, there are two other Disney Cars crib bedding sets to choose from. I found the best price on the Junior Junction crib bedding set over at Walmart and you can pick up the Disney Cars “Little Racer” crib bedding set at Kmart.

Disney Cars Junior Junction Fast Friends Crib Set
$119.99 at Target.com

Disney Baby – Cars Junior Junction Crib Bedding Set
$55 at Walmart.com

$59.99 at Kmart.com
