Nursery Idea: Disney Cars

09
Feb

Not sure what took so long, but they’ve finally come out with some Disney Cars bedding options for the nursery. (Actually, Disney is pretty slow about anything for the nursery other than Pooh.)

But now McQueen and Mater are here and ready to make a stop in your little boy’s baby room. My favorite of the sets available is the Disney Cars Junior Junction Fast Friends Crib Set over at Target. I think I just like the fact that it’s not blue! The warm colors give you some great choices in decorating the nursery, providing you with some of the desert colors that surround Radiator Springs.

Still, if you want to go with blue, there are two other Disney Cars crib bedding sets to choose from. I found the best price on the Junior Junction crib bedding set over at Walmart and you can pick up the Disney Cars “Little Racer” crib bedding set at Kmart.

Denim options for cowgirl bedroom

09
Jan

denim comforter setIf you aren’t looking to make your cowgirl bedroom all pink and girly, there is at least one good way to start.

Denim provides a great base to build a cowgirl room around. It evokes a cowgirl’s jeans, offers a neutral color to build on and can work with other themes if she ever grows out of the cowgirl phase. Not to mention, it can easily be handed down to a little brother with no fuss.

One of the best denim comforter sets I found was over at Target, although it looks a little bright for my taste with this particular theme. Maybe washing a few times would soften the color at bit. It’s a denim bonanza, for sure. You could go with cow print sheets; you get a good idea of what that might look like thanks to the zebra ones in the picture.

denim comforter setIf you want to limit the denim to the comforter, this Tommy Hilfiger denim comforter might fit the bill. It’s a bit darker, which I personally liked, and could be paired with prints on the bedskit and pillows instead of just denim everywhere.

denim quilt setFor a big more stylish look, check out this denim enzyme wash quilt from Bacati. The colors are faded thanks to the wash and you can get it in red or blue. The embroidery breaks up the expanse of the bed (excellent for a larger bed size) and is a bit reminiscent of bandana print. This one definitely could be transitioned over to a teen bedroom without any trouble.

Shark Attack Bedroom Ideas

03
Jan

Da dum, da dum, da dum … .

Ok, it’s not exactly Jaws here. Or Shark Week even. But sharks are the height of cool, making them a nice idea for a bedroom theme element.

My nephew is just obsessed with sharks right now, almost as much as I was as a kid. We just put up an undersea mural in his room and cut out a great white shark from the extra and stuck it to the wall by his bed. (His Orca friend is protecting him at night. :-) When I ran across a few shark specific items, I started pondering how to make this work in a kids bedroom.

Blue is the obvious start for the room. We’re talking water and a lot of sharks have that blue-gray color to them. I really like the color scheme used on this shark beanbag chair from Lilian Vernon – various blues with a little black. You wouldn’t want blue bedding, then blue walls, but you could do one black wall and the others white. That would allow the chair to stand out against the wall.

I have yet to see a shark comforter, but I had found these cool shark sheets from Tommy Hilfiger in the past. And note that touch of red? That’s another color option to help break up the blue. You could go with a red comforter, in fact, to represent the blood in the water. (Trust me. A boy will think that’s cool.)

Thanks to Discovery and Shark Week, there are tons of shark posters and other wall decor available. I found a chalkboard shark wall decal, shark sighting aluminum sign and a kid-sized stuffed shark to help make the room more sharky.

Colorful ottomans and stools perfect for a kid’s bedroom

08
Sep

puzzle ottomanKids are usually bouncing off the walls, but there comes a time in the day when they just want to sit down, put their feet up and take a break. (Talk about mimicking mom and dad!)

Now, if you want them to keep their feet off your furniture, you have to give them their own. And there are a lot of ottoman and stool options out there sized for kids. But seriously, what kid wants a boring blob in their room?

I found a couple of options sure to please just about any kids, although they might not be a perfect theme match for you. (Not to worry. These are just a few of the ones I found. There are tons of other choices.)

One of my favorites is the cute green puzzle piece ottoman, perfect for just about any theme and any age child. It’s available in five colors if green doesn’t work for you and comes via free shipping at Amazon.

flower ottomanAnd what girl wouldn’t love this bit of pink fluff? It’s a pink flower fabric ottoman from the folks at Gund, so you know it’s quality. Best of all, it works with just about any pink theme you can think of.

elephant stoolBut my all time favorite that I stumbled upon months ago is this adorable little guy! This blue elephant stool is sure to draw oohs and ahhs from anyone who sees it. The elephant works with a circus, jungle or safari theme – oh, probably zoo and elephant as well – while the polka dot fabric makes it a match with a room going for a polka dot theme. The blue doesn’t make it just for boys, but that color will pair well with themes for them, for sure.

Boys Bedroom Ideas: Space Blast Off!

09
Aug

Space – the best frontier. And an enticing place to send your son’s bedroom. There are a ton of great ways to build a space bedroom, but I really like this bedding set as a starting point. It’s simple in design and color scheme, making it easy to build on. Appropriate for a younger boy’s room and based on the comments, quality enough to last until he grows out of it.

I poked around trying to find something to pair with this that used the stripe border; that really would have been ideal. As it was, I looked for things that worked with the blue, red and gray colors or repeated motifs like the rockets. There are a lot of space decor choices, but not all work equally well with this particular bedding.

I did find three things that would easily fit with this and give you a good start on decorating the room. The Teen Trends nightstand from Powell is a lovely choice to pair (well, not with the wood bed in the picture necessarily), the metal making it a little space-age. And it’s definitely a piece that will work later for a teen room.

Two other pieces I found copy the rocket motif using the same colors in the bedspread. The Oopsy Daisy Rocket Man canvas wall art shows the red rocket blazing past (and since it’s Oopsy Daisy, there are coordinated pieces like a growth chart). It ships free over at Amazon. Add to that the rocket nightlight I found over at The Land of Nod. It works even when you take it off the base or the power goes out. For eight hours. Awesome.

Teen Bedroom Ideas: Rockstar

04
Apr

Teen boys may not really need decorating ideas. They seem to think piles of laundry count as decorative groupings, right? But it’s fun to think about what a cool room for a teenager would look like. Well, I wanted to after I ran across the cool bedspread in this look.

So I started with the bedding set from Target on this one, which very narrowly defined the color scheme to black, gray and blue. It’s also a little grunge in style, which certainly doesn’t suggest Broyhill furniture. So I tried to stick with more industrial or modern style in the furniture I did pick out. My driving forces were the guitars on the bed and the color scheme. I went back and forth quite a bit on the rug – found a nice gray one as well – but finally decided that part of being a rock star is excess, right? Ha!

There are tons and tons and tons of guitar accessories to be had – the tough part was finding the right color. But I did try to go with some that weren’t guitar specific to make it easier for them to work into a scheme change. I’d finish this look off with posters of favorite bands for sure. My favorite touch is the LED string lights. You could hang them around the ceiling or block off part of the floor as the “stage”. Just a unique item to toss in the room.

Boy Bedroom Ideas: Construction Theme

27
Feb

Building things is so much fun, isn’t it? And then there’s all the big trucks and machinery. And dirt. Don’t forget dirt! No wonder little boys are fascinated with construction and would likely love it as a bedroom theme.

There are tons of construction-related bedding sets you can choose from. This one from Target just happened to be one of my favorites because of the big images and the color scheme. Which then posed a challenge because a lot of construction decor includes red, which I wasn’t using. But persistence prevails! As you add to what I’ve put together, pay attention to the colors and don’t overdo the trucks in the decor. Your child’s toys will provide that part of the theme handily enough.

Two pieces in this room are bound to become some of my favorite due to their versatility. One is the blue rug from The Land of Nod – it also comes in gray and brown – since it has pattern without being dominating. Makes it perfect to blend in with a variety of themes. Then there’s that orange storage bench from Posh Tots. Which doesn’t have to be orange. They make it in several colors and even have your choice of cutout on the front. The classic lines make it a great choice in just about any room and a piece that will last them a long time.

Boy Bedroom Ideas: Orange and Blue Sports Toddler Theme

07
Feb

If you’re into sports, it’s likely your child will be (or pretend to be) as well. Most sports bedroom decor for kids lends itself to the same boring concept and color scheme, so how about something with a more modern touch?

The modern in this scheme is definitely the bedding. No red, no green, no typical. Which was actually a challenge as I was looking at sports decor to pair because it almost all has red and green and didn’t go. Scored some great pieces, though, including – yes – some Tennessee items. Sorry, my family has some orange blood in it. You could swap those out for any team you like – Clemson, Denver Broncos, lots of teams use orange and/or blue.

Boys Bedroom Ideas: Tron Legacy Theme

30
Jan

Hot movie of the past year, guaranteed to be a favorite of any boy over the age of 10. (Including a few the age of 45, I’m sure.) But it’s one of those themes you want to have in your room, but they don’t make it easy for you. So here’s my take on how to do a Tron:Legacy bedroom theme.

The color scheme here is pretty dark; totally up to you whether you want to keep the walls light to balance that out. RoomMates does offer a Tron wallpaper that’s a white background, so you might consider that as an option to pair with other things. This scheme started with the video rocker, then I found the mural. Then … I started running into trouble. Trying to find a bedding set to match with this color scheme – tough. But I love the one I stumbled across because the colors work and it has circles.

Where to get it:

(Since the comforter in the image isn’t available anymore, I tracked down a few other options that could work with this theme and color scheme. A blue and black reversible comforter, blue and silver duvet set and a black and teal/mint comforter set.)

UPDATE: I also ran into this cool light up tape. Great way to mimic the stripes in the TRON look.

Girl Bedroom Ideas: Bright colors and flowers

26
Jan

I love bright colors, but it can be difficult to figure out just how to work them together sometimes. Should you always pair them with a neutral? How many are too many? Fortunately, there are professional people out there who do all that worrying for you. (Yea!) They’re the smart designers who create bedding and art and rugs. Let them worry about those things and you just follow their lead.

Which is what I did with this particular bedroom look, which is full of brights with some not-overly-girly-flowers thrown in. What I love about this girls bedding set is it is can carry your girl through from 8 to 18. (Unless she’s like me and likes to redecorate all the time!) It’s just the right amount of girly without being too little girl.

I’ve paired it with equally bright accessories in all the different colors of the palette. With this many brights, I’d highly suggest lots of white to balance them out and make them shine. Think of maybe painting one wall as an accent in one of the palette colors (ack – too many to choose from) and leave the rest white. White furniture would also be great or maybe a light metal. Definitely avoid dark, heavy pieces. The feeling of this room is light and airy.
