Think bamboo bedding for a panda-themed room

white bedding with green bamboo design

Mourning the loss of the Animal Planet panda bedding set lately. It was perfect – purple, panda, bamboo. A great centerpiece to the panda bedroom idea I dreamed up ages ago.

But, designs move on and so must we, unfortunately. (I’m always sad when people ask me where to find old bedding designs that just aren’t available anywhere anymore.)

So color me happy when I ran across the green and white bedding set pictured here. It’s a great shade of green in a design that looks enough like bamboo growing to work in an Asian or panda-themed bedroom. There are splashes of yellow, turquoise and purple to add some extra color and provide some directions for your color palette. Although it fits right in with the greens and pinks of the room design I came up with since most of the pink was in the bedding.

I like the way they pulled the blue out from the comforter to paint the walls, but you could go with one of the greens if you preferred. Definitely calls for a color on the wall behind the bed, though, to contrast with all that white.

Colorful watermelon world for girl’s bedroom

July 10th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Girl Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

When you start with bedding this colorful, there are just so many ways you can go. One would be to pick one main color from the bedding and do everything in the room in that color and white. Obviously, not my idea of fun. Instead I went totally eclectic, choosing items using all four of the colors to add color to the room.

I actually like this color scheme and room best with white around the bottom and pink above the chair rail area. The white lower down allows all the colors to really pop, while the bright color up top brings some happy. It also keeps the major amounts of color I have going here from being a wee bit too overwhelming. I choose a white bed and white furniture definitely makes a great option here. (Just couldn’t resist the lime green desk, though!) You could go with a different color on the top half of the walls; the principles are the same. Anything like artwork or a wall clock or tall furniture should avoid the pink colors to keep from blending in with the wall, but do allow for a few pink accents near the floor.

It’s summer, so I went with BEHR Ultra Watermelon Pink, although a darker or lighter pink would work as well given the various shades in the duvet.

Going lilac for this owl bedroom idea

June 28th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Girl Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

lilac owl bedroom idea

Wow. Lilac is a tough color to work with! So disclaimer right up front – the colors of the items I picked might not even go together in real life. Screen variations are tough to work with sometimes and especially with finicky colors like lilac.

So, how best to go about doing this room in real life? I’d start with making sure the two most important components match – the large artwork and the bedding. The color here happens to be lilac, but you could do this with any color you prefer. Then work all the accessories around that color. In this case, I have a range of purples from dark to light but all in the pinkish lilac hue. To that, I added a pop of complementary color – mustard yellow here. So if you go with blue, consider adding orange. If you go with green, consider adding pink or red.

In choosing accessories, I was also looking for animals – owls because of the big print, giraffes because they’re yellow.

The big owl canvas was a great piece to build a room on because it only has two colors really – lilac and gray. No confusion about what the color scheme should be!

Paint color: Sweet Dreamer from Lowes. Possible accent colors would be Orchid Blush from Glidden at Home Depot and Benjamin Moore Flying at Target.

Feeling the shabby chic blues

April 26th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Girl Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

inspiration board for a shabby chic bedroom in raspberry, coral and aqua

I’ve been in love with this Anna Rose bedding from India Rose ever since it first came out. The color combination is fresh and clean and bright, and there’s just the right amount of girly with the rows of ruffles. It’s the kind of design that’s a nice compromise between girly and tomboy.

That said, I went with a more shabby chic interpretation for this room. You’ll notice with the tiny exceptions of some yellow in a few pieces, it’s a pretty strict color palette going on here. I went with colored furniture, but it would work equally nicely with all whites. And they’re probably easier to incorporate into a different room idea than the ones I picked. Well, but you can paint them to work with a new scheme. One of the very nice things about painted furniture.

I love the idea of an accent wall in the strong aqua with the red bed and white bedding up against it. Then the aqua art and dresser stand out against the pink wall color. Look for more accent items in punches of white and raspberry to put around the room.

Suggested paint colors – YOLO Colorhouse 1-Gallon Sprout (light pink – wall above), YOLO Colorhouse 1-Gallon Petal (pink), Valspar Interior: Lipstick Jungle (raspberry), Benjamin Moore Tooth Fairy (light aqua), Valspar Interior: Reflection Pool (dark aqua).

Tie up this girls bedroom idea with a bow

March 29th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Girl Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

All the bows on this bedding set just scream “girl” to me. Without doing it too loudly, of course. (Not very ladylike.)

Actually, this bows comforter set from Target is a great way to start off a girls bedroom theme. The black background keeps it from feeling too little girl, while the pink bows ensure there is no question it’s a girls room. And you get a couple of shades of pink to work with here.

Given the style of the design, I’m leaning toward elegant and French rather than something too little girl as far as the rest of the room. And you can’t think elegant without thinking Audrey Hepburn, right? Love this image of her as Holly Golightly – just the right note and colors. I also really liked this set of fashion prints; again elegant and the right colors and feel. Oh, and don’t forget a chandelier!

UPDATE: I created a board on Pinterest related to this post. It has the items shown here as well as tons more I found that fit with the concept.

Teen Bedroom Ideas: Kicking it with Roxy bedding

January 31st, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Teen Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

As girls get older, there comes a point when they’re ready to ditch the stuffed animals and think a little more grown up with their bedroom decor.

But grown-up doesn’t have to mean stuffy. Nor does it have to mean super themed like a little kids room might be. No, a teen bedroom can be mature but fun. A good place to start for a lot of teen girls would be with Roxy bedding designs.

Roxy is a surfing brand and has translated that fun into its bedding. One of the ones I love best is the Summer Stripe bed in a bag set pictured here. It has everything you need for the bed and comes in all the sizes a teen would want. It brings in lots of colors (including just a dab of pink) and stripes are a nice background for just about any other decor she’d want to bring in.

Along with comforter and duvet sets, Roxy recently added a few quilt sets to its collection, including the Element Quilt pictured here. Again, a nice neutral backdrop to whatever other decorating she wants to do and just enough girly to make it hers. The quilt sets are a bit cheaper than the others, which is another great reason to consider them.

Denim options for cowgirl bedroom

January 9th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Girl Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

denim comforter setIf you aren’t looking to make your cowgirl bedroom all pink and girly, there is at least one good way to start.

Denim provides a great base to build a cowgirl room around. It evokes a cowgirl’s jeans, offers a neutral color to build on and can work with other themes if she ever grows out of the cowgirl phase. Not to mention, it can easily be handed down to a little brother with no fuss.

One of the best denim comforter sets I found was over at Target, although it looks a little bright for my taste with this particular theme. Maybe washing a few times would soften the color at bit. It’s a denim bonanza, for sure. You could go with cow print sheets; you get a good idea of what that might look like thanks to the zebra ones in the picture.

denim comforter setIf you want to limit the denim to the comforter, this Tommy Hilfiger denim comforter might fit the bill. It’s a bit darker, which I personally liked, and could be paired with prints on the bedskit and pillows instead of just denim everywhere.

denim quilt setFor a big more stylish look, check out this denim enzyme wash quilt from Bacati. The colors are faded thanks to the wash and you can get it in red or blue. The embroidery breaks up the expanse of the bed (excellent for a larger bed size) and is a bit reminiscent of bandana print. This one definitely could be transitioned over to a teen bedroom without any trouble.

Teen Bedroom Trends: Giant Flower Bedding

November 8th, 2011 | Posted by ideaqueen in Girl Bedroom Ideas | Teen Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

Not entirely certain when this happened, but flowers are getting bigger. No – it’s not due to global warming. Just a design trend I’m seeing in floral bedding.

It’s mostly targeted to teens, I think, as I look at these styles. Tons of very, very, very large flowers having been making their way into bedding styles. I love most of them because they’re so dramatic and eye-catching and girly without being too little girl (like the Sloane set from Target pictured here). Which makes them perfect for a teen. Not to mention, a few big flowers is far less fussy a look than something with tons of small flowers.

One of the places these are popping up the most is over at Target. Their latest designs are quite slanted in this direction. But there are a ton of options blooming all over. I’ve featured a couple of my favorites here, but you can check out a bigger selection of giant flower bedding I collected over at Squidoo.

Girl Bedroom Ideas: Pink cowgirl all the way

November 1st, 2011 | Posted by ideaqueen in Girl Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

Saddle up, cowgirl! And bring all your pink with you if you want.

It’s a fascinating contrast when you start looking at all the pink cowgirl bedding and decor items you can get. For an adult, it just seems a tiny bit odd, but for a young girl, it makes perfect sense. So if your girly girl wants a cowgirl bedroom, it’s easy enough to do. Just imagine her cowboy hat has a bow on it instead of dust.

I’ve included two of my favorite cowgirl bedding sets here. The paisley pink western bedding isn’t overtly cowgirl until you add in the throw pillows. It’s somewhat elegant, definitely a look she can grow with since it’s not too little girl. I could see a teen using this set. The other cowgirl bedding set pictured here is just sweet and would work well for a younger girl.

Or you could build the room around a great piece of cowgirl decor. I personally loved this cowgirls stretched canvas wall art from Oopsy Daisy. Plenty of pink, plenty of cowgirl, plenty of girl – perfect!

I run across a lot of cool art as I poke around looking for kids bedroom ideas. I do include pieces at times, although the prices are probably more than most parents would want to spend on one thing for a child’s bedroom.

But I recently saw these great stretched canvas wall pieces by Rachel Taylor from Oopsy Daisy called When I Grow Up. There’s one for boys featuring a construction worker, surgeon, cowboy, fireman and astronaut. The pink polka dotted design for girls features a baker, ballerina, musician, archeologist and Olympic athlete.

They’re sized at 28 inches wide by 14 inches tall, and I found them for around $110 each at Amazon.
