Making quite a switch from that modern room earlier this week, huh? I wanted something warm and cozy, with lots of color and yet only one color. The red wall color really sets off the lighter colored furniture and those cute dog prints. (Cute probably doesn’t do them justice, actually.)

We’re working with a palette here of red and cream, with browns being a darker version of cream. There’s nothing overly dark in the scheme at all, but lots of cream. Oh, and flowers as a sub-theme with the rug, pendant and pouf covered with them. You could go with a floral comforter to carry that through a little more, but I really like the more neutral stripe. Replace the dog prints for over-sized black and white shots of your child or their favorite things.

If the red is just too much for you – it will admittedly be a bear to paint the whole room that shade – consider doing just a single accent wall, putting the bed up against it, then hanging the pictures framed in oversized cream frames over the headboard. A tip for painting the red, do a coat of paint or primer in black first, then do the red. It’ll make it much deeper and richer than trying to paint over white or off-white walls, and you can possibly get away with just one coat of red then.

Trend Topic: Everyone loves the Brits and the Union Jack

union jack decor

The hardest part of that British-themed bedroom last week was deciding what not to put in. Because when it comes to design trends, the Union Jack has been taking center stage for a while.

I’m not sure if it’s the crisp red, white and blue that draws us. After all, we get that with the American flag as well. But there is a lovely symmetry about the way the stripes are laid out on the British flag. I’ve found in on everythign from the rug under your feet to the clock on the wall and trust me, there are many, many, many more where these came from. These just happened to be some of my favorite ways to bring the Union Jack design into the room.

Have you added a touch of British love to a room? What did you use?

calm cream, white and red bedroom with british theme

All things British are pretty popular these days. From the historial Keep Calm poster to the union jack flag, you can get a room together in no time that shows a love for the English.

I’ve pulled together a few pieces, along with non-themed items for a room here that’s subtle and calm with more emphasis on the red and white colors. Accents are in brown and bronze metals with some London landmarks and the trademark red buses and phone booth thrown in for good measure. The key here is to keep things low-key, so I went with neutral walls as well. Feel free to mix creams and whites with a scheme like this one as the punches of red with draw the eye around the room.

Loving on Lionel Trains for a bedroom theme

June 26th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Boy Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

Train bedroom theme influenced by Lionel Trains

Little boys love trains, and nothing is more iconic than Lionel Trains. I was looking at some of the vintage tin signs that you can get with the Lionel brand and started thinking how to work them into a room. The cool thing with what I’ve come up with is that nothing other than the artwork is specifically train. You could change the art out for baseballs or boats or stars and be good.

I like the idea of a yellow accent wall to put the bed up against, but I know not everyone is that brave. Generally, you could stick with plain white or the pale gray I used here.

As I was hunting for pieces, the main things I was looking for were black iron, red and blue large pieces and yellow accents. The train decal I choose is one of any number of train wall decals you can choose from. Oh, and don’t forget to add in a few actual trains as decor pieces as well!

Modern teen room with a retro twist

modern teen bedroom design idea with a retro twist

Since I talked about how to copy a bedroom last time, I decided to try my hand at doing the same for today’s decorating idea/inspiration board. If you check out the Harvy Pool nightstand at CB2, you’ll see a bedroom they have with the nightstand as a part of it. Love the nightstand, liked the room, thought I’d make my own version.

The hardest part of this really was the artwork. There are so many choices out there! Which is great because it’s definitely a way for you to personalize the room to your taste and interests. I definitely got to the “just pick something already” point by the time I choose the EVRT Studio prints. The other thing was the bedding, and I went with the colorful, then throw a white blanket on rather than the other way around. Love the duvet and all the colors in it. Makes it really easy for you to find an accent color or two you really like. (Not everyone would want turquoise and red!)

The walls in the room are white and I think I’d stick with that since it provides the best backdrop for the punchy color accents.

Add a touch of firefighter decor

January 12th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Boy Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

brick wall muralOh, yes, you can get tons of firefighter decor items. Things very specifically designed for a firefighter room. But, let’s think just a bit out of the norm, shall we?

As I think of a fireman bedroom, this is definitely a place to consider the elements that make the whole. For example, think of the bedroom as a firehouse. And what do you need for a firehouse? How about brick walls! Easy to do with a mural or wallpaper.

ladder wall shelfAmong the other elements would be poles, ladders, hoses and general fireman gear. Keep an eye out for things that remind you of those (or even are specifically those things) that would work in the room. The storage unit pictured here is just meant to be pretty, but doesn’t it look like a ladder? You could decorate the canvas storage units with something fireman related to tie it in even more.

Check out fireman costume and dress-up play sets as well. The pieces tend to be plastic, making them light to hang. You could get an ax, fire extinguisher, badge, helmet and other items that way to hang on the walls.

Oh, and if you take a trip to check out your local firehouse, you’ll probably get a ton more ideas!

Boy Bedroom Ideas: Firefighter Elmo

November 18th, 2011 | Posted by ideaqueen in Boy Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

I often talk about mixing themes for kids. Which gets me blank stares occasionally. But there are times when it’s obvious to everyone and you see the light click on.

One such is an idea I had for an Elmo firefighter room. It all started with the NYFD Elmo plush doll they came out with a couple of years ago. (Isn’t Elmo cute in that gear?) Then the Sesame Street Fire Department bedding came out and, well, there you go.

Now, those are really the only specifically Elmo/Sesame Street and fireman pairings out there. Supplement it with either solids in red, yellow and black (to match Elmo) or general fireman toys and decor.

One of my favorite ideas would be to do your own photo series. Take fireman Elmo down to the firehouse and see if they’ll let you take pictures of him on the truck, sliding down the pole – wherever would be interesting. Do just Elmo or dress your son up as well and get them both in action. Three to five pictures gives you a good collection and builds the theme out. (Would love to see pictures if you do that!)
