blue toddler boy beddingTake a quick scan through the most popular toddler bedding and you’ll see a billion characters you know (and sometimes love!) from TV and movies. And, it’s entirely likely that’s exactly what your child wants.

But what if you’d like to have something a little more flexible at the heart of the room? Something without a real theme that would blend in with decor you’re carrying over from the nursery or decor you’re hoping they’ll keep when they graduate to a big kid room?

How about a single color modern design? One really popular set (that’s also very reasonably priced) is the Metro toddler bedding pictured here that includes the comforter and sheet set. (Oh, and ships free at Amazon!) There’s also a pink version for your little girl’s bed.

Now, if you’d like to work with something other than the traditional pink or blue, Olli & Lime’s toddler bedding might be just the trick. It comes in nice bright colors – Billie in orange and brown pictured here and George in bright lime green and brown. They’re a bit more expensive (being designer and all) and only include the quilt and pillowcase. But still a nice bright gender-neutral option to consider.

Boy Bedroom Ideas: Firefighter Elmo

November 18th, 2011 | Posted by ideaqueen in Boy Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

I often talk about mixing themes for kids. Which gets me blank stares occasionally. But there are times when it’s obvious to everyone and you see the light click on.

One such is an idea I had for an Elmo firefighter room. It all started with the NYFD Elmo plush doll they came out with a couple of years ago. (Isn’t Elmo cute in that gear?) Then the Sesame Street Fire Department bedding came out and, well, there you go.

Now, those are really the only specifically Elmo/Sesame Street and fireman pairings out there. Supplement it with either solids in red, yellow and black (to match Elmo) or general fireman toys and decor.

One of my favorite ideas would be to do your own photo series. Take fireman Elmo down to the firehouse and see if they’ll let you take pictures of him on the truck, sliding down the pole – wherever would be interesting. Do just Elmo or dress your son up as well and get them both in action. Three to five pictures gives you a good collection and builds the theme out. (Would love to see pictures if you do that!)

Sharing a bedroom across genders

February 11th, 2011 | Posted by ideaqueen in Kids Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

Seen a lot of questions lately where two young siblings of opposite sexes are having to share a room and mom is struggling to come up with a bedroom theme that will work. The trick is to think about not just themes that cross genders, but where the circles between themes overlap. That Venn diagram thing. This could be the setting, it could be a common element, it could be pink and blue sides of the same coin. Here are a few ideas:

  • Castle – element that overlaps for princess and knight (or prince/king) – oh, don’t forget the dragons!
  • Underwater – setting that overlaps for sea creatures and mermaids
  • Above water – setting that overlaps for pirates and mermaids
  • Stars – element that overlaps for outer space and dreams
  • Sky – setting with airplanes for him, hot air balloons and rainbows for her
  • Outdoors
    • Forest and meadow – he gets bears and deer, she gets butterflies and bunnies
    • Backyard – he gets a treehouse with a “no girls” sign, she gets a garden in full bloom
    • Farm – put the pigs and tractors on his side, the stable with the horses on hers
  • Pets – Dogs and snakes on his side, cats and rabbits on hers
  • Book characters – Do they both like Curious George? Babar? Clifford? Find a book they both love and build around that.

And don’t forget that there are just some nicely gender-neutral themes to consider that usually just get changed around by color scheme. Work with a color scheme both children can agree to and then work in elements.

  • Artist – think crayons, paint brushes, palettes, bright colors
  • Circus – animals galore and a big top tent
  • Jungle – lots of green and great animals to work with
  • Safari – think brown prairie grasses, a watering hole and African animals
  • Beach – sand, water, sky colors mixed with bright surfboards and towels and swimsuits
  • ABCs and 123s – Work in any color and can be mixed with lots of other elements

Boy Bedroom Ideas: Orange and Blue Sports Toddler Theme

February 7th, 2011 | Posted by ideaqueen in Boy Bedroom Ideas - (Comments Off)

If you’re into sports, it’s likely your child will be (or pretend to be) as well. Most sports bedroom decor for kids lends itself to the same boring concept and color scheme, so how about something with a more modern touch?

The modern in this scheme is definitely the bedding. No red, no green, no typical. Which was actually a challenge as I was looking at sports decor to pair because it almost all has red and green and didn’t go. Scored some great pieces, though, including – yes – some Tennessee items. Sorry, my family has some orange blood in it. You could swap those out for any team you like – Clemson, Denver Broncos, lots of teams use orange and/or blue.
