Boys Bedroom Ideas: Rugby bedding
Apr
Well, sort of rugby, really. This gorgeous quilt set from Greenland Home Fashions is called a rugby quilt set. And it certainly evokes elements of rugby with the stripes and numbers.
But really, I can see this being used in so many different ways that aren’t rugby specific. It definitely works in a general sports bedroom theme. (Note the balls and trophies on the shelf in the picture.) I’d say something with a vintage feel to it, actually. The colors and style of the numbers lean that way. But I could also see it in a race car room, again with a vintage feel to it.
What other themes with numbers can you think of that this set would work with? Gotta love when you can work outside the box the designer wants to put you in!
Set comes in twin and full/queen sizes and you can opt for the little floor pillow for just $10.

Add a touch of firefighter decor
Jan
Oh, yes, you can get tons of firefighter decor items. Things very specifically designed for a firefighter room. But, let’s think just a bit out of the norm, shall we?
As I think of a fireman bedroom, this is definitely a place to consider the elements that make the whole. For example, think of the bedroom as a firehouse. And what do you need for a firehouse? How about brick walls! Easy to do with a mural or wallpaper.
Among the other elements would be poles, ladders, hoses and general fireman gear. Keep an eye out for things that remind you of those (or even are specifically those things) that would work in the room. The storage unit pictured here is just meant to be pretty, but doesn’t it look like a ladder? You could decorate the canvas storage units with something fireman related to tie it in even more.
Check out fireman costume and dress-up play sets as well. The pieces tend to be plastic, making them light to hang. You could get an ax, fire extinguisher, badge, helmet and other items that way to hang on the walls.
Oh, and if you take a trip to check out your local firehouse, you’ll probably get a ton more ideas!

Shark Attack Bedroom Ideas
Jan
Ok, it’s not exactly Jaws here. Or Shark Week even. But sharks are the height of cool, making them a nice idea for a bedroom theme element.
My nephew is just obsessed with sharks right now, almost as much as I was as a kid. We just put up an undersea mural in his room and cut out a great white shark from the extra and stuck it to the wall by his bed. (His Orca friend is protecting him at night.
When I ran across a few shark specific items, I started pondering how to make this work in a kids bedroom.
Blue is the obvious start for the room. We’re talking water and a lot of sharks have that blue-gray color to them. I really like the color scheme used on this shark beanbag chair from Lilian Vernon – various blues with
a little black. You wouldn’t want blue bedding, then blue walls, but you could do one black wall and the others white. That would allow the chair to stand out against the wall.
I have yet to see a shark comforter, but I had found these cool shark sheets from Tommy Hilfiger in the past. And note that touch of red? That’s another color option to help break up the blue. You could go with a red comforter, in fact, to represent the blood in the water. (Trust me. A boy will think that’s cool.)
Thanks to Discovery and Shark Week, there are tons of shark posters and other wall decor available. I found a chalkboard shark wall decal, shark sighting aluminum sign and a kid-sized stuffed shark to help make the room more sharky.

Boy Bedroom Ideas: Firefighter Elmo
Nov
I often talk about mixing themes for kids. Which gets me blank stares occasionally. But there are times when it’s obvious to everyone and you see the light click on.
One such is an idea I had for an Elmo firefighter room. It all started with the NYFD Elmo plush doll they came out with a couple of years ago. (Isn’t Elmo cute in that gear?) Then the Sesame Street Fire Department bedding came out and, well, there you go.
Now, those are really the only specifically Elmo/Sesame Street and fireman pairings out there. Supplement it with either solids in red, yellow and black (to match Elmo) or general fireman toys and decor.
One of my favorite ideas would be to do your own photo series. Take fireman Elmo down to the firehouse and see if they’ll let you take pictures of him on the truck, sliding down the pole – wherever would be interesting. Do just Elmo or dress your son up as well and get them both in action. Three to five pictures gives you a good collection and builds the theme out. (Would love to see pictures if you do that!)

Boys Bedroom Ideas: New dinosaur bedding choices
Nov
Dinosaurs are roaring and stomping over at Target right now. A new line has been released from Circo featuring really colorful dinos paired with brown that I really love.
These are great with the neutral backgrounds – make them easy to blend in but also the dark makes it hard to see all the little boy dirt. But the dinosaurs are colorful and fun, giving you a lot of options for pairing them with pillows, wall colors and more. Pick just one color – like orange – and go with all your decor items out of that or mix it up with the green, blue and red.
One of the nice things about this line is how it crosses age ranges nicely. It’s cartoon dinosaurs, but they aren’t too little kid. It’s a set that could work for your son for several years and in a room with boys of different ages. The style is available in a duvet set, quilt set and comforter set.

Boys Bedroom Ideas: Space Blast Off!
Aug
Space – the best frontier. And an enticing place to send your son’s bedroom. There are a ton of great ways to build a space bedroom, but I really like this bedding set as a starting point. It’s simple in design and color scheme, making it easy to build on. Appropriate for a younger boy’s room and based on the comments, quality enough to last until he grows out of it.
I poked around trying to find something to pair with this that used the stripe border; that really would have been ideal. As it was, I looked for things that worked with the blue, red and gray colors or repeated motifs like the rockets. There are a lot of space decor choices, but not all work equally well with this particular bedding.
I did find three things that would easily fit with this and give you a good start on decorating the room. The Teen Trends nightstand from Powell is a lovely choice to pair (well, not with the wood bed in the picture necessarily), the metal making it a little space-age. And it’s definitely a piece that will work later for a teen room.
Two other pieces I found copy the rocket motif using the same colors in the bedspread. The Oopsy Daisy Rocket Man canvas wall art shows the red rocket blazing past (and since it’s Oopsy Daisy, there are coordinated pieces like a growth chart). It ships free over at Amazon. Add to that the rocket nightlight I found over at The Land of Nod. It works even when you take it off the base or the power goes out. For eight hours. Awesome.

Personalized airplane wall decal
Jul
There are tons of art ideas for an airplane bedroom theme. But one of the easiest and most special for your child is something personalized with their name.
And of all of those, one of my favorites is the adventure plane wall decal pictured here. Isn’t it cool? Not only is it a stylish vintage bi-plane (very popular these days), but you can personalize the banner with your child’s name.
This particular decal is made of really thin vinyl, so once you’ve applied it to the wall, it looks hand-painted rather than like a sticker. It’ll work on any smooth space (so think twice before trying to stick it to highly textured walls) and is fast and easy to apply.
Oh – bonus! You can customize your colors! Pick one color for the name and plane and another for the banner. More than 30 colors to choose from so there’s sure to be one that matches your color scheme.
Prices start at $44 at Layla Grayce for a 16″ high decal. Pick from several sizes to get right one for you.

It’s baseball (decorating) season!
May
Anyone else excited baseball season is here? I love going to the ballpark, soaking in the sun, cheering on my team. (Which is the Rangers these days since I live in Texas.)
I grew up really into sports in general and baseball in particular. I think because it was the only time of year we were playing sports ourselves and had the time to focus on watching instead. So I’ve really loved looking around at all the baseball bedding and decor options out there.
I ran across this amazing baseball field pendant as I was adding to my baseball lights collection. Isn’t it cool? It’s not specifically designed or meant for kids bedrooms, but it works there just as well as in a man cave. I’ve seen pendants being used in a lot of bedrooms in place of a floor lamp by a chair for reading. Nice idea and a beautiful piece to add to a baseball room.

Painting Idea: Football Field Wall
Apr
It’s easy when you do a sports-themed bedroom to just paint the walls blue and put some clouds. After all, most sports are played outdoors and it fits with the theme.
But I ran across a picture in the customer gallery over at Fathead.com the other day that had just the coolest wall. The kid had an Indianapolis Colts bedroom going on, but instead of painting the wall blue or white, it was painted to look like a football field. So something kind of like this:
Just a rough idea – my white lines are probably too thick – but you get the picture. He then had art and decals hung over it and it worked really well. (Sorry, I can’t put his picture here. Copyright and all that jazz, ya know.)
This is really one of the easiest kinds of paint jobs to do. Paint the wall white, measure out the yard markers and tape a straight line down. The paint everything green, pull off the paint and viola! Two tips here :
- When using tape to mark off stripes of any kind, there is a risk of seepage. The is when the paint doesn’t lay completely flat and the top coat – the green in this case – seeps under. You can fix that by painting over the tape with the basecoat color – the white here – then applying the top coat. That way, the white seeps under and you end up with a nice crisp line once the tape is removed. Very good idea if you have any kind of texture on the wall.
- The numbers could be done several different ways. You could get some number stickers and use them the same way as the straight tape – stick to wall, paint green over, remove sticker. You could also get white number stickers and just put them on after the green paint has dried. Or, you could try stenciling them on. I’d lean toward getting white numbers just because you’ll have to do the stencil several times to ensure a crisp white over the green.
What do you think? Something you’d try? Have another great football wall idea? Love to hear it!

Teen Bedroom Ideas: Rockstar
Apr
Teen boys may not really need decorating ideas. They seem to think piles of laundry count as decorative groupings, right? But it’s fun to think about what a cool room for a teenager would look like. Well, I wanted to after I ran across the cool bedspread in this look.
So I started with the bedding set from Target on this one, which very narrowly defined the color scheme to black, gray and blue. It’s also a little grunge in style, which certainly doesn’t suggest Broyhill furniture. So I tried to stick with more industrial or modern style in the furniture I did pick out. My driving forces were the guitars on the bed and the color scheme. I went back and forth quite a bit on the rug – found a nice gray one as well – but finally decided that part of being a rock star is excess, right? Ha!
There are tons and tons and tons of guitar accessories to be had – the tough part was finding the right color. But I did try to go with some that weren’t guitar specific to make it easier for them to work into a scheme change. I’d finish this look off with posters of favorite bands for sure. My favorite touch is the LED string lights. You could hang them around the ceiling or block off part of the floor as the “stage”. Just a unique item to toss in the room.
