Take a walk through a jungle nursery idea

jungle walk nursery inspiration board

No baby elephants here, but a jungle animal walk for your baby anyway. I went for bright splashes of color against a neutral background and not excessively bright bedding. (New line out from Target and not available in stores, just FYI.)

Use whatever mix of animals you happen to like. I tend to choose based on colors and whims when I make a board, which makes for a great room, but you might prefer more zebras than giraffes. One of my favorite pieces here is the twig lamp, which you can put on a table or hang from the ceiling. I was thinking of the later for this room since I already had a cute animal table lamp. I think I would put a super low-wattage bulb in it and use it as a night light.

Pink is on pointe for a bunny ballerina nursery

September 25th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Nursery Ideas - (Comments Off)

These cute ballerina art prints have been on my radar for a while now. I love the mix of sweet and elegant, making them the kind of thing your little girl can keep for ages. (There are two others in the series, but they use different colors so didn’t work here.)

This room starts with those two art pieces and a dusky pink wall. The backgrounds in the art are brown/taupe/gray kind of shades, meaning you can kind of go both ways in adding in your neutrals. I was looking for bedding that had pink, but not too much pink since the wall was pink, then furniture in whites that would show up nicely against the pink. I found a chandelier I liked better than the Tadpoles one I went with, but it was $2200 so, uh, no. You can add any kind of animal you like; I just choose bunnies because they tend to be the ones in ballerina items (along with teddy bears) and, frankly, I’m getting tired of the owl trend.

Three things to remember when planning a nursery

September 6th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Decorating Tips | Nursery Ideas - (Comments Off)

The amount of planning for a baby can get overwhelming and fast. (There’s a reason What to Expect When You’re Expecting is such a big seller!)

Creating the perfect nursery is pretty high on the list, especially for those of us just looking for any excuse to decorate something. You browse through magazines, stores and catalogs looking at all the great baby gear and before you know it, you’ve got a long list that might not go with your short budget. (Trust me, diapers are way more important than cute pictures!) It’s a bit of a bubble-burster (yes, that’s a word!) to think you can’t do everything you want. But everything you want is often based on someone else’s idea of what a nursery should have and look like.

Instead, I’d propose three things to keep in mind when you’re planning for your new baby’s room. Three things that often get overlooked in all the excitement of having a baby and decorating a nursery.

  1. Remember the Adults – You’ll be spending almost as much time in the room as your infant, so don’t forget to do things that make it comfy for you. That means chairs that fit you, shelves where you can reach them and cushions you can adjust. Some of this will come to you as you start using the room, but it’s nice to think ahead and have it ready for you when baby comes home instead of trying to get it together during a time you’re getting no sleep and can’t think straight!
  2. Baby No More – Baby isn’t a baby for long. So organizing the room and purchasing furniture based on baby being a baby isn’t always a wise investment. A lot of cribs these days come convertible to a toddler bed or you can purchase a kit to make it so. But think for a toddler as much as you can when buying dressers and storage items.
  3. Small is Splendid – Babies are pretty small. And until they get to be a few months old, they don’t move much. All of which means you don’t need a lot of space to create a nursery. A closet space or hall alcove can work just fine for those first few months until baby is big enough to need space to crawl and toss toys.

Any other tips you would add for someone planning a nursery for the first time?

A nursery so bright you need shades

September 4th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Nursery Ideas - (Comments Off)

Whip out those sunglasses! We are’t just having a riot of color this time, but a riot of really, really bright color.

Bright isn’t to everyone’s taste in a nursery, but I just love the fun of so much color. You could tone the whole thing down a lot by painting the walls white or pale yellow instead of the neon green I went with, but where’s the fun in that? The whole thing starts with fabric for curtains, which is where we get the color scheme for the rest of the room. You could use the kaleidoscope fabric and its coordinates to make bedding, but I opted for a calmer bedding set to contrast with the walls nicely. Why’d I go with fabric for the curtains? Because, dang it, trying to find non-girly curtain panels in a colorful pattern is a non-starter. I think I looked through about 50 stores before I gave up and decided we’d make them instead. Sheesh!

One plus for this particular fabric is the variety of colors, including a touch of pink. Which makes it pretty simple to swap this room over to girl by changing out a few of the accessories. Several of the baskets and the limited edition prints come in pink options as well.

All the furniture is white, including that great glider, which actually has green piping to match the walls. Love! The white makes for a really sharp contrast with the wall color, making things feel crisp and modern. You could go with dark wood as well to try to cozy up the feel of the room.

Wild colors and wild animals in this bright nursery idea

August 2nd, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Nursery Ideas - (Comments Off)

orange pink black white nursery idea with wild animals

Wild colors meet wild animals in this nursery inspiration board. And orange and pink together – a great combination!

The concept behind the room is all the black and white animals you can find – zebras, sheep, penguins, pandas. It’s quite a long list once you get going! So we have tons of animals in the little decor touches, which can go on the table or on a shelf. I tried to work as many different kinds and shapes of animals in as I could.

The crib is one that can convert to a toddler bed and I was thinking of that long-term use when I started piling up the pillows. Think in terms of making a miniature daybed. The stuffed bears can then become part of the pillow assortment.

The bedding is a custom made option I found at Etsy; she has quite a few fabrics to choose from in this color scheme. I picked the four I liked together best, but mix and match as you please. Rule of thumb for mixing patterns: one solid (or reads as solid), one large print, one small print, contrast in the backgrounds.

I’d stick with painting just one accent way with the orange (matched to the chair) where you would put the tree wall decal. This gives you the bright without becoming overwhelming. Plus, no way you want that orange chair up against an orange wall.

Heading into the woods for this bird-filled nursery idea

July 17th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Nursery Ideas - (Comments Off)

gray nursery theme with owls and birds

I’m a big fan of bright and cheery, as I’m sure you’ve noticed if you’ve been following my inspiration boards generally on this blog. But there’s a good reason for nurseries to be calm and soothing. How to do both?

One easy trick for making a room calmer (and way better for sleeping) is to do the walls dark. In this nursery, I went with dark gray to give a neutral and calm base to build the room on. (Totally inspired by someone else’s gray nursery, I admit it!) We have punches of turquoise and green, even a little orange in there as well. And some great textures in there with the pouf and the lighting. And yes, you can combine brown and gray; definitely not a mix of neutrals you see often, though. As an accent for the art and decor, I went with owls and birds just for the cute factor.

Pop art zebra for a mod nursery

June 21st, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Nursery Ideas - (Comments Off)

blue and gray nursery with zebra influence

The overall effect of this room is probably a little more eclectic than modern. Hmm. Definitely pieces of a lot of different styles here, but I like the way they work together.

I was looking for a chunky metal crib with a bit of a vintage feel to it, and while the one shown isn’t precisely chunky, it fits in just fine. And white bedding is the perfect choice here in whatever style you choose.

This all started when I saw a pop art zebra painting hung on a wall with a black, white and gray wallpaper. It made such an interesting contrast that I wanted to try it out myself.

Isn’t that rug cool? (Not to mention incredibly expensive!) It’s called elm and is really tree rings but you could easily mistake it for a zebra. Comes in gray and a few other colors as well.

My Little Monster Nursery Idea

blue green brown monster nursery theme idea

Cocalo just released this adorable new crib bedding called Peek A Boo Monsters and I just couldn’t resist. Look at those adorable faces! The hardest part of this room was trying to limit myself to one of everything. I found tons of rugs that would work, not to mention all the possible decal options that I didn’t even include.

Great idea for a boy nursery, although there’s no reason it couldn’t be for a girl instead. Maybe with greens in place of where I put blues.

Nursery Ideas: Lion King crib sets featuring baby Simba

April 3rd, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Nursery Ideas - (Comments Off)

For the longest time, you didn’t have a lot of options when it came to Disney crib bedding. Maybe Pooh, but that was about it. (And you certainly had lots of Pooh bedding choices!)

But, as I mentioned recently, there have recently been some Disney Cars crib bedding sets released. And right on their heels, two different Lion King sets, both featuring Simba as a little lion cub. I love the one to the left here – the dark brown sections add for some nice contrast and you can see how nice they look with the dark furniture.

The second Lion King set is nice but a little bland for my taste, but you might prefer a calmer color scheme. Actually, it would look nice against green walls or an outdoor African scene. Maybe the bland in the picture comes from the beige walls. Still, I know there are some people who like the very neutral look like that.

Update: There’s more than just crib bedding available now! I’ve tracked down Lion King bedding in other sizes and RoomMates recently released Lion King wall decals to go with everything.

Nursery Idea: Disney Cars

February 9th, 2012 | Posted by ideaqueen in Nursery Ideas - (Comments Off)

Not sure what took so long, but they’ve finally come out with some Disney Cars bedding options for the nursery. (Actually, Disney is pretty slow about anything for the nursery other than Pooh.)

But now McQueen and Mater are here and ready to make a stop in your little boy’s baby room. My favorite of the sets available is the Disney Cars Junior Junction Fast Friends Crib Set over at Target. I think I just like the fact that it’s not blue! The warm colors give you some great choices in decorating the nursery, providing you with some of the desert colors that surround Radiator Springs.

Still, if you want to go with blue, there are two other Disney Cars crib bedding sets to choose from. I found the best price on the Junior Junction crib bedding set over at Walmart and you can pick up the Disney Cars “Little Racer” crib bedding set at Kmart.
